Waydoo Evo Max Plus Review

Within the Waydoo ecosystem, choosing the right board often comes down to a choice between agility and pure stability. I spent a full season riding the 90-liter Waydoo Evo Pro Plus before adding the larger, 130-liter Waydoo Evo Max Plus to my lineup this year.

Living and riding in Norway, the water is usually freezing and the weather can be rough. I was generally demotivated to go out because I was terrified of falling into the cold water and dealing with aching joints. But since getting the Evo Max Plus, I fear less of that. I like riding this board because of how safe and stable it makes me feel.

If you are a hardcore surfer who wants to jump and carve aggressively, this is not a setup for you. But if you want to cruise, sightsee, focus on filming, or teach beginners, this board is a phenomenal option.

The Core Difference: Volume and Stability

The primary differentiator between these two models is the physical volume displacement of the hull.

  • Waydoo Evo Pro Plus (90L): A standard-sized eFoil hull that offers a balance between stability and manoeuvrability. It requires a bit more active balance to taxi and get up on the foil. As a beginner you need to start lying on the stomach.

  • Waydoo Evo Max Plus (130L): This is a high-volume, highly buoyant board. The extra 40 liters of volume change the riding dynamic. It floats (depending on your weight), making the pre-flight taxiing stage incredibly stable. For me, it diminished the anxiety of falling into the freezing North Sea.

Durability for Beginners and Rentals

One good thing about the Waydoo Evo line is the use of expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam built around an aluminum alloy frame.

I have taken this Max board out a lot and have let at least 30 to 50 complete beginners try it. They have crashed it into docks and all sorts of places, yet the board itself still looks new. If you are running a rental business, an eFoil school, or just have a lot of friends who want to try the sport, this EPP foam construction is a lifesaver.

For the ultimate beginner-friendly setup, I highly recommend configuring the Max board with a short mast, the Glider 1500 front wing, and the propeller guard.

Batteries, Charging, and Smart Features

The Evo Max Plus utilises the same battery options as the rest of the Evo line. I personally use the larger battery option.

  • Charging: A regular charger takes about 4 hours to fill the battery, but the fast charger is more efficient, restoring power at a rate of roughly 1% per minute.

  • Propeller Options: If you decide to upgrade to a folding propeller, Waydoo includes a specialised cone that replaces the bulky propeller guard, allowing you to streamline the drive train.

  • Geo-Fencing: For commercial use, the board includes a built-in geo-fencing feature in the app. This allows you to digitally block off shallow water zones or hazardous areas on a map, which is an incredible feature for rental operations to protect both the riders and the equipment.

Because the 130L Max Plus is a longer board, there is a greater physical distance between the mast and the front-facing sensors. This extra separation gives the system a cleaner, more stable reading of the board's pitch, resulting in smoother automatic throttle adjustments compared to the shorter 90L Pro Plus.

4. Is the EPP foam hull durable, or will it look cheap?

Do not let the word "foam" fool you—expanded polypropylene (EPP) is incredibly tough and built around an aluminum alloy frame. Unlike traditional carbon fiber or fiberglass boards that scratch, chip, or crack the second they bump into a concrete dock or rock, the EPP foam acts like a bumper. It absorbs impacts easily. I’ve had dozens of beginners crash these boards, and the hulls still look good as new. If you do somehow manage to get a deep gouge, you can simply repair it at home with EPP glue. That being said, Waydoo is a budget board.

5. Does the board hold water after riding?

Yes, this is one specific quirk of the Waydoo EPP hull design. Water tends to get trapped inside the frame gaps during a session. Even if you lift the board up and try to clear it out with high-pressure air after rinsing, water will continue to slowly drip out of the two drainage holes at the nose for days. If you store your board indoors, you will definitely want to place a towel or a mat underneath the nose to catch the puddle.

6. Can I upgrade or swap parts later if my riding style changes?

Yes, and this is one of the best features of the Evo lineup. The entire ecosystem is 100% modular. The mast, motor, battery, wings, and hulls all use interchangeable connections that take less than two minutes to swap out. If you buy the massive 130L Max Plus for your family to learn on, you can later buy just the smaller 90L Pro Plus hull or a longer performance mast and use your existing battery and motor.

7. Which battery and charger setup should I choose?

Waydoo offers two main lithium-ion battery sizes (1800Wh and 2300Wh). I highly recommend going with the larger 2300Wh option, which gives a lighter rider around 2.5 hours of cruise time (and about 2 hours for a heavier rider around 80kg).

  • Standard Charger: Takes about 3.5 to 4 hours to charge.

  • Fast/Inverter Charger: Takes around 100–120 minutes. A massive bonus of the fast charger is its "inverter" feature, allowing you to use your eFoil battery as a huge 1,500W power bank to plug in electronics or appliances during road trips.
